Project Overview

This full-scale renovation in Watford balanced the preservation of architectural heritage with an upgrade to contemporary living standards. The work included complete internal reconfiguration, structural improvements and premium finishes, with a bespoke kitchen as the centrepiece of the home.

The Brief

The client wanted a home that honoured its period character while performing to modern standards of comfort, efficiency and finish - reconfigured internally, structurally improved and finished to a premium specification, all without eroding the property's existing charm.

The Challenge

Two challenges defined this project. The first was heritage: integrating modern systems - smart automation, sustainable insulation and energy-efficient lighting - while protecting the character of the home. The second was occupancy: the clients remained in residence throughout, which demanded meticulous site management, clear communication and careful daily coordination to minimise disruption while keeping the home clean and organised.

DSB's Approach

We delivered the renovation in carefully considered phases, sequencing structural works and finishes around the household's daily life. Heritage-sensitive detailing was balanced with contemporary performance upgrades, and clear communication kept the clients informed at every stage - protecting both the fabric of the home and the experience of living in it during the works.

THE INTERIOR

Modern systems, hidden inside a period house.

The technical content of this renovation is almost entirely invisible. Automation, insulation and lighting were integrated so that the house reads as a period home, not as a period home with technology added to it.

Leicht Kitchen

A bespoke kitchen as the centrepiece of the reconfigured ground floor, with a honed granite island and full-height glazing to the garden.

Smart Automation

Control systems routed and concealed during the structural phase, so no cabling had to be chased into finished heritage fabric later.

Sustainable Insulation

Insulation upgraded to modern standards while retaining the existing wall build-ups and period detailing that give the house its character.

Energy-Efficient Lighting

Lighting designed to suit period rooms rather than impose a contemporary scheme on them, with fittings and levels chosen room by room.

Structural Works

Structural upgrades carried out behind the scenes to support the internal reconfiguration without altering the external appearance.

Live-In Coordination

Phasing, dust control and daily site management planned around a household that stayed in the property throughout.

The Outcome

A refined residence merging period character with contemporary design - featuring premium finishes, structural enhancements and seamless functionality. The home retained its warmth and character while gaining the comfort, efficiency and quality of a thoroughly modern renovation.

WHAT THIS PROJECT DEMONSTRATES

Heritage kept, standards raised.

This project shows DSB modernising a period home without stripping away its character, and doing it while the clients remained in residence.

  • A period property can meet modern comfort and efficiency standards without losing the detail that makes it worth preserving. The two are not in conflict if the sequence is right.
  • Modern systems are routed during the structural phase, not chased into finished surfaces afterwards. That is what keeps the technology invisible.
  • Working in an occupied home changes the job. Phasing, dust control, noise and daily communication become part of the build, not an inconvenience alongside it.
  • Heritage-sensitive work depends on deciding what must be protected before deciding what may change.
  • A high standard of finish in a period house is judged against the original detailing, which is a harder test than a new build sets.

“Daniel and the team were fantastic to work with, thoughtful and accommodating while we still lived through the renovation, and on budget. Most importantly their workmanship was excellent, with a high attention to detail.”
